Basic Concepts of the Plan

UNSMIS is jointly funded by the affiliated Organizations and the Members (Staff and Retirees).

Active Staff Members and Retired Staff Members receive the exact identical level of coverage and pay the same percentage premia. The contributions of plan members are subsidized by affiliated Organizations at 50% for Active Staff and at 66% for Retirees.

As participation to UNSMIS is NOT mandatory, it is the Staff Member's responsibility to ensure he proactively requests affiliation. The same applies to individuals who are about to retire, it is their responsibility to proactively request continuation in the Medical Insurance Plan and agree to the premium contributions being deducted from their future pension. Please do note that, although participation is not compulsory, Staff are nonetheless required to have medical health insurance similiar to that provided by the United Nations, in particular with respect to Geographic coverage, worldwide, and benefit packages.

The plan hinges on the principle of freedom of choice. There are no blacklists nor are specific medical providers excluded. However, in order to ensure the financial viability of the plan, to avoid premium increases and to minimize your out of pocket expenses, we strongly urge all members to ensure the care they are being provided is reasonable and customary, financially and medically wise.

We strongly urge you to make use of medical structures with which UNSMIS has tariff agreements. Most of these structures are based in Switzerland, particularly Geneva and Vaud  Cantons, reflecting the geographic make up of the plan population. For a complete list please follow the link.
